Where to buy equipment?

Is there a merchant which sells equipment in the starting town?* For instance, I'd like to buy a shield for my cleric, but have been unable to find a vendor that sells them.* Thanks!

Just look for the Smith in Rumen. He'll have shields next to the armor section. Weapons are there too.

The smith sells equipment, though you might want to try out questing for stuff instead, as it does add up in costs quickly.
