I read that the area spells are only supposed to effect a very limited number of mobs. Yet, i have heard from many mages/fighters that it effects ALOT more. Which would explain why people will AEO 20+ mobs. When the skill is hitting all of them. Otherwise there would be no incentive to lure more than your spell can cover.

I'm sure you don't :) But, it basically became the isolated reason for a pretty extreme balance issue. The ability to hit 30+ mobs is broken. It's as extreme of a bug as if "Bash" hit for 5-10 times it's intended damage. It would be a pretty broken bug if a cleric could hit 3x harder than a mage, right? Well, that's exactly what this bug allows. Being a cleric myself, with no area spells, we are the only class not benefitting from this bug(unless in a party). We shouldn't be forced to play "party healer" to rely on other classes to exploit the bug to earn exp. at a competitive level.
