Fellow Solstice players with the same problem I have encountered with the black terrain has been solved. BUT, for those who might have the black terrain map problem might also have the attack damage problem. Im assuming your damage doesnt show right? Only gray boxes? Well I couldnt solve this, but I have solved the map:

Please go to the thread link above and follow his directions. After you are in the <resolution> menu, uncheck "Light-Map" and put your resolution all the way to the lowest. The reason why you should put your resolution to low is because if you are encountering the same problem I did with the map, you dont have a very good graphic card, so you might as well set that to low for better game play.
Try logging in and see if it works. The map might be grid looking, but its still better than traveling on an empty time space. I will further-go through more searches to help solve the damage problems.
