Well I was in misty wood and I was killing a boar with my friend. When I was mearly about to die, my friend killed the boar right before it hit me and I still died..

lol, that happened to me too...i just figured that it was lag and the boar actually already hit me but it didnt show until after it died.

I Think that sometimes the damage is taken. before the action is shown as graphic

Well that would depend on if it was already in the process of hitting you, as in did it already start to swing? if so usually the damage still follows through, like when you run from something your like 10 feet away but it hits you, or you are in mid attack on a monster and all of a sudden it runs before your weapon actually touches it, you will see that the damage was still delt.
