The other day, upon my journey of trying to reach 50, I was grinding in my
favorite zone, Goblin Camp.
Goblin Camp is usually empty, quiet, lots of good XP, diverse mobs, shoot,
I've even found 4 treasure chests there while grinding.
But, on this particular day, I was not so alone as usual. Thanks to the mothers day experience boost, every person in their high 30's that plays the game, was camping out the hill where all the goblins and procks lurk. Luckily I was quite a bit away, grinding bears and mushrooms, when the amount of mobs and space in the area was dwindling, and no one was getting enough experience.
"***!!! omg get out of my space, i was here first "
"No, we were here first"
"***** You, you **** ***** **** **** with your stupid hair. "
"I will war you!"
"U ghey"
"Come to pvp im gonna kill you all."
"I'm gonna kill you *****"
"Dont KS **** Omg im gonna war you!"
"You dumb gurls put yer tampons in"
A never ending stream of little stars, poor spelling, and intentional misspelling of profanity swamped the normal chat, making it near impossible to use it. People shouting terrible terrible things to one another. Things I certainly could never say to another person, not to their face, that's for sure.
But there in lies the problem. Anonymity. What does it matter if you scream horrible sexist, racist, culturally offensive things to each other when you're not looking them in the eyes? They're a stranger, you will most likely never see or hear from them again, who cares if you insult their gender, or religion, or sexual preference?
The truth is, those people you are threatening and harassing through the Internet are still people. Living, breathing, thinking, feeling, gaming people just like you and me. Just because you cant see or touch them doesn't change that.
And really, what on earth is the point of getting that worked up about something? If someone KS's you, or trains you with mobs, or even just starts grinding where you wanted to grind, you really only have three choices, you can report it, and leave their bums to the mercy of the GM's, you can let it go, this is just a game after all, or you can... get really really upset and scream profanity at them?
How on earth do you pick the latter option over the other two? The report button exists for a reason, if you feel you've been wronged, report it, believe me, i know, jail happens to everyone that doesn't behave properly, and you DON'T want to go there, but it exists to protect you from that attitude. And in the end, this is just a game.
I'm going to go ahead and repeat that, let it soak in there.
This is just a game.
Yeah it sucks when you die, it sucks when your weapon breaks when you try to enchant it. I hate it when someone runs up hits the mob I've been tanking for like 3 years and stands there for experience. Yeah, I want to chew them out, or swear, and I usually do. To myself. Out loud where no one else can hear it. Because regardless of whether or not they know what it is they're doing, or if its a mistake, I'm still looking at the pixelated avatar of a real human being. I don't know their story, I don't know what they've been through, and if I'm the one freaking out and acting like a lunatic, they cease to be the bad guy.
This game is for everyone, and there are some young people that play this game, one of my best friends here is only 11 in real life. You don't scream F- you at an 11 year old girl, and yet I've seen people do it.
It shouldn't matter if someone is an 11 year old kid playing in her dads guild, or a 36 year old former naval officer, or a 22 year old out of work writer , because we're all just people trying to have fun. Behind each character is attached a real human being, and I dont care how right you think you are, that should be what matters most.
I'm not saying you cant get mad, in my experience, thats kind of impossible. But what I'm saying is that there are better ways to handle the problems. Ways that dont make you look like a raging maniac.
Ahh... yes, the Report button. Use it. Love it. And let it be the method of your revenge for that KS shot that took your kill, instead of spamming awful things for the whole world of Isya to see.
This whole planet would run a lot better if we remembered more often that we are all human, least of all in Fiesta. So chill out, calm down, fully utilize your ability to block and report people and just have some fun. Its a good game to play where you're not ripping your hair out because someone whispers you "U r gey and have no brian" .
