Hello there neighbors. I am in the forums today to uh... *reads subject* OH YEAH!
Disclaimer : These are all my SAFE, VERIFIED METHODS, tested and tried them myself. No bugs or viruses, certain things you can download at YOUR discresion but they are helpful tools I say.
Assuming you are all running with Windows XP, I'll stick with only Windows XP instructions. You know though, people that play the game, some of them have the MINIMUM requirements to play the game, and well, it gets laggy, one of the biggest problems is what your computer could offer, if after all these steps you taken have no effect, well, it probably could be a few things such as viruses, not enough ram, display card is outdated, blah blah blah. I won't get into those details yet, until I experiment with that myself.
Anyway, here's a few small [to some people, big] ways to at least improve your PC just a bit:
1. "MSCONFIG" This is a werid one, but one of the best, but on one condition, you have to DISABLE ALL YOUR PROGRAMS YOU SET UP ON STARTUP \[computer nubs, you know when you turn on your computer and you get all these "program" things popping out on you? That's what you call a "startup item"]
To do this:
Start > Run > Type in "msconfig" [no quotes] > Check that your tab is on the "General" side, Click on "Selective Startup" and CHECK OFF "Load Startup Items". > Press OK, but you'll be prompted to restart, well, restart if you like. Then you're done.
Why this?
Just see for yourself. When you restart or turn on your computer, in about 10 seconds when it gets into your desktop, YOU CAN CLICK ON ANYTHING AND NOTHING IS SLOWING DOWN YOUR COMPUTER! Plus, that restart also frees up it's CPU [computing processing unit I think what it means, but basically, your game won't slow down as much].
2. "Check your video card settings" If you have the majors like ATI, nVidia, voodoo, etc., then you could be in luck. All of them have a "Configuration Setup" Which I can't go through all of them, but try googling it. When you get to their setup, always put on options that support "performance" rather than "apperance". You want to play the game after all.
Why this?
Hmm... Let me see, Have the prettiest graphics in the world and see your character move like a slideshow, or have it ugly, but passible enough to see and be able to move smoothly? The choice is yours.
3. "Windows Update" www.windowsupdate.com . But when you get there, click on "optional", then check out the Software and Hardware sections of the update. There you go.
Why this?
There could be potential upgrades for your video cards and other electronics on your computer, if in doubt, check them all up. Haha.
4. [For DSL/Cable, T1, T3, anything but dial-up] "The ol' modem restart trick" Conceptionally easy, actually doing it could be a bit hard, if you know your modem, then it's all good. When your connection is lost all of a sudden and don't know what's going on... and assuming you already paid the bills for it, or your MUMS AND DADS I guess, then this is what you can do.
1. Find your power plug that powers up the modem, unplug it
[1a. If you have a router, unplug both router and modem, plug back modem first, then the router]
2. Wait 5 seconds or so, then plug it back in, you should see the lights going all WHEEEEEEEEEEEE.
3. Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. You should get one of two things that you could be connected to:
"Local Area Connection" is when your PC is connected to a modem.
"Wireless Network Connection" is when you go, wireles [that's when you know when you have a router, or if your neighbor has a nice wi-fi connection, haha :P]
Whichever connection you are using, right click the one that is "connected" and click on "Repair". Does all the fancy work for you and see if you can go online or if your connection feels better.
Bonus Section [Quickie Laptop Advice]
- You may have to download this, but I verified and used this myself, but download Speedfan at http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php . This basically shows the temperature of your laptop. [and when your laptop gets super duper hot, that equals a slower game] Depending on your Laptop Model and Manufacturer, you may have more options to choose from and to optimize the fans to work, etc.
- If your laptop heats up excessively and you can buy something, You can go either for:
*Getting a laptop fan that cools down the whole bottom built for a laptop fan [google laptop fans]
*If you are confident in your assembling/deassembling skills, read here http://www.fonerbooks.com/lap_fan.htm
*If you want an effective fan but don't mind the noise, you can buy something like that and rest your laptop on that, LMAO! http://www.nfauto.co.uk/images/august2004/16-inch-fan.jpg [Yes, I done that before, it really works, but it's annoying how you got to position yourself]
As for now I am still on the making of corrections, more ways to fix
your computer, and ways to uh... *looks at the subject title again*
"Optimize your PC to play Fiesta. If you're going for comments, go for
it, feedback on this is real crucial, I want the feedback to answer the
following questions:
1. Is it UNDERSTANDABLE?
2. Are the definitions of these computer terms correct?
3. Any other ways you found out to optimize the pc? [Otherwise, skip this one]
4. Uh, anything else? Haha xD.

My only concern with previous posting is that the author is giving us computer advice and does not know what CPU means.*
*It is not "computing processing unit " instead it is "Central Processing Unit".* That is one of the first things anyone who knows anything about computers usually learns.* So my advice is if you're going to be giving advice about computers*at lest take and pass a basic computer literacy class.

Your suggestions are on the Mark. Even though you were incorrect about what CPU stood for, its not what was important. What was important was the Reasoning behind it, and that was on the money. Not only that but it clear the Ram at the same time.

Another suggestion is to keep your Computer Defragged. Just open up "My Computer" right click on a Hard Drive, go to Tools and select Defrag. Depending on the last time it was done, how big a Hard Drive you have and how much is on that hard drive will effect the time it takes to Defrag, anywhere from a Half hour to even a couple of hours, the more your Hard drive is Fragged, the more your PC slows down. Also check the Amount of Free space on your Hard Drives. You want to keep at least 20% of your Hard Drive free. Because this cuts into your Virtual Ram after awhile which also slows down your PC, and your PC will shut down the game if the VRam gets to low.

Also check out PC Pit Stop (pcpitstop.com) do the full test there. Sometimes it can find problems with your PC and help optimise it.

Thats all I can think of for right now. Good Job on the FAQ Tehsamm Keep up the good work.<!--

if you have a registry repair program u can use this as well to minimize errors as files within windows can become corrupted if not corrected and cause programs such as fiesta to crash.* This isn't a program that comes with your pc btw...
u can also run a clean up*program that does come with windows xp, and clear usless*clutter that bogs down your pc...remember the less room you have on your harddrive the slower and laggy the game will become as your computer writes a file to your harddrive to use as what is called "page filing" this file allows your pc to access information from your harddrive quicker and well guess where Fiesta is installed...yup your harddrive.
back to the clean up program it can be found in all programs under Accessories and under System Tools.* its called Disk Cleanup.
Another thing that can slow down your pc is spyware.* There are no programs that comes with windows xp that can remove it so a third party program is needed i recommend Ad Aware as it seems to do the best job and finds stuff that other spyware removal programs misses.* spyware is small lil programs that take up system resources although what whats his name the creator of this thread mentioned in the first place...to temp fix this problem disabling startup programs is a good way to avoid installing another program esp if you are low on harddrive space

Everyone should really be careful when using disable all start up items!
A lot of programs and services will stop working if disable EVERYTHING. For instances i know many scanner/printes which wont start up properly, bluetooth devices, and Anti-virus programs. Get someone who is knowledgable in computers to go through your list and manually remove items.

before you step in and say the game gave you a virus, let me give you a few bits of information.
First some virus's can corrupt other programs.
Second some virus scanners read certain Files as a Virus, but they are not truely a virus.
I prefer to use Avast and AVG anti-virus in back to back scans. Avast is a Great (AND FREE) anti-virus program that is able to do a Boot scan. This is a Major Plus, because some of the more trouble some virus out there infect anything in the boot up. When a virus infects something from the boot, its makes it VERY difficult to remove once you are fully into windows (If you have had a nasty virus on your PC, and get the message that your unable to delete a file, because its in use. Its usually a boot sector program and you cant mess with them after the boot up.)
Plus when you double it up with AVG, you are just making double sure that IF avast does miss something, its most likely going to pick it up.
I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot search and destroy, back to back for the very same reason. If one misses something, the other is sure to pick it up.
I RARELY encounter anything that cant be dealt with, using all 4 of these programs. If I do, then I head to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php and get Hijackthis and then find a Forums to get expert help with the problem.

Not to be a jerk. u should really make the game universal to all comps.i seee u have a minium requiremnt. but in all reality we shouldn't have to do anything but dl the game. its just a suggestion. nothing else.
imported_marasgal
08-25-2007, 11:40 PM
As nice as that would be for them to be able to design a game that anyone could just DL and play without making any modifications, would be very tough.
First they would have to drop the graphics so much that it would not be worth playing. You would basically be playing an 8 bit system (Like Nintendo). You would have very few if any people willing to play a game with graphics like that. Second, they would have to drop the speeds of everything so that those who were using dial up would be able to play, and again anyone on a faster connection would get sick of the slow motion gaming, they would just move on.
It sucks I agree, but to make a popular game that people are going to want to play, you have to deal with what is going to bring in the most people,
The only thing I can suggest is to find a small computer shop, and pick up some second hand parts and upgrade your PC for pretty cheap. You would be surprised what you can find for almost dirt cheap, if you look around at some of these shops. Plus you can save some money if you install the parts yourself, or have a Friend who knows how to install the stuff for you for free.

Marasgal, it really isn't necessary to have four anti-virus / anti-spyware programs on your machine at once. In fact, that can and will bog down your processor.
Most anti-virus programs can't be closed completely, even if you disable them, they still use valuable system resources.
Ad-Aware is good to have, but SpyBot is a bit redundant after that.
On top of this, it is not necessary to have an anti-virus program to kill viruses. When your computer gets a virus, it is very obvious. Repeated "encountered a problem and needs to close" errors, especially with a known good program, such as a commercial game, is usually a sign that you have a virus.
To remove a virus, it's easy enough to open your task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and sort by username on the processes tab. This will show you which programs are being run by your Windows user account (what the system percieves to be "you"), your network adapter (your modem if you're unfortunate enough to be stuck with 56k, or your router/cable or DSL modem if you aren't), or the system itself. System processes usually consist of four-letter abbreviations or names of Windows functions. The proces, "rundll.exe" is the task manager itself. Anything started by your user account could be one of three things: A program started by Windows (things like your speaker detection, Windows volume control, etc, as well as anything designated as a startup program in msconfig), a program you've started (Microsoft Word, a game, or Firefox ("http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/"), etc), or something started by a virus (programs that are jumbles of letters/numbers, valid programs that have been latched onto by a virus, etc).
If you skim the list of processes, take note of any that look suspicious, write down their names, and then kill them (Killing a process is a term that refers to ending it with the task manager). Killing a process can cause small issues with system stability, but all will be restored when you restart your computer. Keep killing suspicious processes until the symptom of the virus disappears.
Then click on Start -> Run, and type in "regedit" without the quotes. Press CRTL+F, or click Edit -> Find... and search for the last process you killed before the virus' symptoms disappeared. Go ahead and delete any non-system registry keys with that process's name in it. NOTE: If you do not do this step, some more tricky viruses will, I repeat, *will* come back either immediately, or on restart.
Restart your computer, and check for the symptom again. If it's gone, you've killed the virus. If not, it was probably a multipart virus, and you may need to repeat this process again to catch all the parts.
**IMPORTANT!** Do not attempt this unless you consider yourself extremely familiar with the inner workings of a computer, both software and hardware. If you encounter anything that you don't know what it is, it's in your best interest to leave it alone, and stop using this method.
Another thing you can do to help is just general common sense online. Don't be a retard. Things like peer-to-peer download services, especially LimeWire , Shareaza, and Kazaa, are not only full of viruses that people upload, but a few of them are actually viruses themselves. I've had numerous customers bring me a computer and the only thing wrong with it was that they had used LimeWire, and it replicated itself on their hard drive over 100 times, causing page file errors and ruining system speed. It took me a whole day to find each one and kill it. That damn thing was as persistent as a frickin' vampire - sometimes the wooden stake wouldn't even finish it. :s
Emails from lottery sites, or anything with a free offer is probably a virus. Websites such as MySpace are riddled with spyware and Internet cookies that impair your browser, as well as emos, gays, and people who think they're cool because they can play the stupid electric guitar. (C'mon, laugh with me, people! I'm a funny girl~).
Online dating sites often have spyware, as well as adult sites - watch out for those.
Don't go downloading random things - some sites will sneak viruses in on you when you download a song, for example, and there're even ways to encode viruses into jpeg pictures.
I hope this information is helpful to you, and I hope to see you all in open beta on Monday.
Cheers~
Lexi

Well to you it might seem redundant and to some it might, but as I said, Avast will catch almost every virus I have but once in a while AVG will pick up one that Avast didnt catch. Its rare I admit but I would rather take the extra care in that once in awhile then not to have it.
Same goes with Ad-aware and Spybot, Even though one might catch most, they both dont catch ALL of them.
I very rarely have the problem of a Virus that I cant deal with. I think I have only had maybe 3 viruses that I was unable to deal with.
Each person has to choose what they feel is and is not important on their computer and make their choices accordingly.
I think the best suggestion as far as this is concerned is to visit sites that deal with Virus problems and read them over. Not just one site but several and make a well informed decision on what you want on your PC.
As for me, all 4 programs are what I think is important, and will continue to use them unless I find another program that I think is better then one I already have. Its better to have to much protection then not enough.

*shrug* Dont like to hear myself talk, you made a suggestion, I gave you a Reason.
Either way, this thread is suppose to be about how to make the game run more smoothly not about Virus detection methods or suggestions. I take partial fault in dragging the thread off course, but lets let the thread get back to what its suppose to be about.

i have windows vista as well, but most of the above things work with vista as well,
it should also be noted that for XP users, Fast User Switching was always a good thing for me to turn off, and its a feature that most people dont need want or use, its what allows you to have multiple user profiles logged on to the computer at the same time, and having it does take sonmething out of your computer regardless of whether or not you use it.
for all windows users, there is a 80% chance you have too many icons on your desktop, this does slow you down, try to find ways to put them elsewhere, like in your start menu, in fact, organize your start menu, and remove duplicate, or extraneous entries.
also for all users, turning down your visual effects can help, stuff like sliding open menus not only slows down your computer, but you have to wait while it slides the menu out to see them, you can access this by right clicking My Computer, selecting properties,(vista - click advanced system settings), (XP - click the advanced tab), then performance(its labeled settings), then turning off all the pretties they can dare to part with.
vista users can turn off their aero features, that fancy button that gives you the cool view of all your windows, you know the one, i forget how, but if i remembered, id turn mine back on >.< lol, there are a number of other good things to mess with, but i reccommend trying to figure ways to leave the windows security stuff in place, cause it helps with the virus stuffs, it really does in vista.
on to spyware, viruses, and the nasty stuff that "helps" you to remove it... im not a computer nub, i can and do manually remove every bit of that which i dont want that comes on to my computer, if you think you can too, then do, cause spyware removal programs and antivirus software usually end up slowing you down as much as that which it is meant to remove, if not more, i can think of no better example than Avast! which has an active scanning feature, i find active scanning to be a cool, and well designed feature, but this is always running, which means that it takes processor time, it takes some of your hard disks read time, and it just isnt as helpfull as it sounds. this is true of most anti-virus software.
also, hard disk space, someone mentioned 20% free, and this is true. if you use more than 80% of your hard drive, it will crush your speed, however, unless you have your turbo western digital 15k rpm drive, this means any of you who didnt specificly put it into your computer, laptop users, this does mean you, then you should go even further if you are really trying to optimize, and bring your hd down to 50% usage, this is about as helpfull to you as the drop from 90%used to 80%used, which is to say quite a bit.
being a firefox user, i must now push firefox at you, you should set your internet explorers security settings to max, then download firefox, get the adblock plus addon, the adblock filtersetG updater addon(this may be built into adblock plus, i get it anyway), and the IETab addon. you know all those pesky ads on your favorite free stuff sites and such that they want you to give them moneys to get rid of? those are gone now, those annoying flashing banner ads? gone now, the hundreds of security holes that internet explorer has? no longer an issue... this alone is helpfull to your security, and to top it off, firefox is faster than internet explorer, it has a search bar that doesn't spy on you and its skinnable(w00+!)
for happy downloading fun, i reccommend the use of the flash got addon for firefox, and your fav download manager, mine happens to be flash get

I agree with the Avast active scan slowing down the PC, but all you have to do is right click the icon in the tool bar and select "Stop on-access protection" it still uses a little bit of the memory, but that is just to keep the icon active, the rest of the program is held in a dormant state, I have tested it while I was playing in CB, with Avast running and again after I selected "Stop On-Access Protection" You see a Massive speed jump.
So before people start deleting Avast from their computer. Please take the time and look at the pros and cons of using Avast, or better yet, wait til the game is up, and do your own testing. You could also just do the MSCONFIG trick, shut it down, restart your PC just before you go into game. Then you wont have to worry about it while you play. Just remember to turn it back on before you go surfing the net.

An extra tip for laptop players, if your laptop shuts down WHILE PLAYING FIESTA, it is possible your a/c adapter can't handle high processing games like Fiesta, so it's recommended you have to play on "Windowed Mode" in the game, and at the same time, open up the "Power Option" by getting to the Control Panel, and clicking on the POWER METER tab to check your laptop's battery power. [Werid, I know, there's an option to keep the battery icon opened nearby the time, not sure how to do that, some laptops automatically have those features].
If you also love using iTunes and Fiesta at the same time, you can try using your iPod or some form of MP3, right?
This next tip goes for anyone, if you want the best performance, quit all your messengers, and right click those bottom right icons and quit most of them [Know what they do first before closing]. Otherwise, have a nice day everyone :D

If you guys tell me that CPU is wrong, i know it is, but if i get one more comment LIKE THAT, imma punch you T_T [you rainybird person... I won't bother reading the screenname since you didn't bother to read the part when it says "I THINK CPU MEANS THAT"]. But yea, thanks for reviewing over guys, this has been my first time making a guide to be honest... I read so many guides before so yeah, really thanks ^^.
Now and then, I'll might update this post with more useful ways, the newer ones will go to the bottom of the page.
And about the "msconfig" part, I know, it's god xD. I still am in the process with messing around mainly with the laptop. As for the few people with laptops that can run Fiesta, I might be able to help them out...
Might make a seperate faq for Laptop users? Hm... The next faq might be in a different section, more like in the gameplay section, something I like to call "Common Sense"

Ænima, my best recomendation is to try using a download manager. =D I personally prefer Free Download Manager, but I haven't tried a hell of a lot of different ones.
Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm)
Download managers are pretty handy for problems with downloading. They help keep things in check.
Besides that, it can also make things a lot faster, and, if your internet connection acts buggy, a good many of them will store the download, and resume it later.
On another note, thank yee everyone with your advice and what not. o.o I know the basics of manually taking care of things and what not, but I'm still not exactly computer savvy. Some of these tips were pretty useful with my over-all computer performance. =D .... Haven't seen how much they helped Fiesta, though. Too lazy to play right now. xD -Is hopeful.-

To your video card question, because I was too general about it, the directions to get to your video card varies and I don't know how to get to all of them, just through ATI, but if you need instructions on that, let me know anyone? Okay?
Edit : Alternatively, you can google the instructions with the video card you know you have.

Disclaimer : These are all my SAFE, VERIFIED METHODS, tested and tried them myself. No bugs or viruses, certain things you can download at YOUR discresion but they are helpful tools I say.
1. "MSCONFIG" This is a werid one, but one of the best, but on one condition, you have to DISABLE ALL YOUR PROGRAMS YOU SET UP ON STARTUP \
I have an MCSE and A+ Cert (both the old and new cert) I have also worked for Dell and currently for Gateway in tech support.
I would NEVER recommend to someone to simply disable EVERYTHING in MSCONFIG in the startup area. For one thing this is where the Video card interface program you talk about useing later resides and starts from usualy. Also I would never recommend someone disable their antivirus software from this area, at the least it's going to try to restart itself after the computer is finished starting to desktop, and at the worst it may cause problems with the antivirus software that could lead to it needing to be reinstalled.
NEVER DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND/OR FIREWALL SOFTWARE WHILE YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
This maxim goes along with the one about opening email attachments from anyone, even people you know, unless you know exactly what your doing. Yea maybe nothing will happen now, or next week, but eventualy you'll regret it.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ranger...
MSCONFIG holds a lot of very important programs, quite a few of which are anti-virus, firewall, or components of those two.
Additionally, never try to disable explorer.exe ... please...
Its a tad important.
And since I'm on my laptop... I also am going to keep the touchpad software running. I might want to be able to use it.
However!
There will still be quite a few things remaining. Its usually pretty safe to remove everything else. To be safe though... disable programs you don't recognize bit by bit. When you notice problems, you can then re-enable exactly the one program that you found was needed.
I agree with defragging and removing spyware too.
In addition... there are processes that you can disable, while your computer is running. If you go to the Windows Task Manager, you can look at the Processes tab, and end some of those too. Most of the time... that won't be neccessary, because you cleared your startup programs a bit. But you might want to try it if you have a decent knowledge of what can be safely disabled and what you'll want to leave alone. Anyways,
Good Luck with computer speederizing!:D

Uh.. Opps >< I just realized that but from the msconfig tool...
From the msconfig, go to Startup and you might want to run some programs up that would be important for you.
Thanks for catching this guys. :[ I don't think i can edit my original post. Oh, and I made another FAQ, but where is it at is the secret :o. Can you find it?

No it doesnt. There is a section of code they have set up, that does cause some virus detection software to think there is a virus, but its not. Try to read their FAQ before you say something that isnt correct.
If you did a little research, you would find that PC Pitstop has had major reviews from all sorts of sites about Antivirus and making your computer run at its best. I have seen a couple of reviews in about the last 2 weeks, which puts PC Pitstop in the top 10.
If you still doubt me, just head over to PC Pitstop, go in the forums, and ask them if their software causes a False Positive to some virus scanners. They will be MORE then happy to explain in great detail, or even direct you to where you can read in great detail about what exactly is going on, and how come your Virus scanner is going off when you use their software.
Did you know that Norton's antivirus (Not sure if it still does) used to cause other virus scanners to claim it had viruses in it? It was just a false positive. I still think Norton's is junk, but that is only my opinion.
