It's an MMORPG,(Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Game) which means you must be connected to the internet to Interact with other people that inhabit the game. And you must be connected to the internet to be able to connect to the servers and play.
It's not like one of those little PC games like the SIMs, where you just install and can play with or without an internet connection.
So yes, it is an online game.
