Beta is a testing phase for games. Basically what you are doing as a player is helping the developers work out problems and fix bugs with the programming. When they feel sufficiently sure they have collected enough data to modify the game coding for public release, they close the beta portion of the game. This also means all test characters are deleted so all of the final changes can be implemented into the game properly. This is all standard procedure for any beta test phase. If you ever beta test a game again, know in advance that this will happen before the public release.

uhm....... Slayer, if you actually went to show effort to find the answers to your questions by reading posts from GMs you will noe that this wipe will be the final wipe for players. Wipe was only for closed Beta and not for Open Beta.

Wang is correct. Catsclaw has stated in multiple posts that the open beta phase characters will remain active through public release. Only the closed beta characters were removed.

There are two phases in every game initially. Alpha testing, and Beta testing. These terms are based on the sequential ordering of the letters in the greek alphabet. Hence, alpha comes first and beta comes second. If beta was a server, it would basically mean "this is the server that came second". It is actually a representation of the second testing phase for a release.

Actually Jatznic, some games have another stage after Beta, and it can be called either Gold or Final Version. Now in some rare occassions they will do a wipe again when moving into this Gold or Final version, but not always.





The only other time I can think of a game doing a wipe after this stages is IF there is a Major bug in the game that has caused mass problems, and sometimes a full wipe is required to fix the problem, but in my 17 years of playing and testing MMORPGs I have only seen this happen a couple of times.

Yes..but you were referring to "beta" as if it were something tangible. When I speak of the beta server, I speak of it strictly as a nomenclature and nothing else.

Let me see if I can clear this up a little.





Beta is a Testing phase, but some games do call their servers a Beta Server. Just to show that the server is in a Beta Testing Phase.





its like when scientists are doing testing, they dont call each subject by name but rather call them Test Subject A or Test Subject B. That doesnt mean their real name is Test Subject A or Test Subject B. Its just a way for Labeling, These Individuals are part of a Test and are labeled so.





So just as a scientist would label a subject, so do the game creators. A server might start off as Alpha Server, then as things progress into Beta Testing, they rename the same server as Beta Server. Just for showing that the server is under Beta testing.

Well yes and no, your only partially correct. A server can be LABELED beta, but the reasoning behind it is because the server is in BETA TESTING.





The testing can go in 2 or 3 Phases.


Alpha Testing - During this phase of the testing, its to test the server for stability, and to make sure the coding is working well enough to move onto Beta Testing.





Beta Testing - During this phase of the testing, the Designers are testing the game, the codes, and killing any bugs they can find, also they begin Stress testing the server





Gold/Final Phase - 95% of the bugs are gone or at least blocked. The servers Stability is good and the only thing they do is add content as needed to keep the players happy and keep them entertained.





There is actually more to each stage of testing but these are basically the main points of each stage.





So like I said you are only Partly correct, the server can be called Beta, but it is only called that to represent the stage of Testing that the server is in, just as it can be labeled Alpha.

Plain English:


The server that was being played on was named Teva. That's what it was called on the server select screen. Period. End of discussion. When people say "beta server," what they mean is "the server being used for beta testing."


Point is, GBig, that you really have no right to complain about items you got from the Outspark store. Not only is this just a testing phase, but the only reason you were able to buy stuff at all was because they gave you free Outspark cash. It's not like you actually paid for it yourself. There's nothing bs about it.
