What does gear with AP means?

I'm confuse with, for example, shoes of firewood +1 6ap....what does 6ap means and how to make it 4/5/etc ap??

Ap = additional points

Meaning, besides the original defense, you get several more additional defense. All gears come in 2, 4, or 6 ap (except shields...they come in 1, 2, or 3 ap). You can find AP gears from monsters, but they are extremely rare.

Just to clarify, the additional points cannot be adjusted -- 6AP shoes will always be 6AP shoes. However, the +n can be upgraded using Xen Stones.

For example, if shoes have a defense of 4, 6AP shoes will have defense of 10.
If you upgrade to +1, it will have 12; +2 will have 14, etc.

The ap (additional points) on a gear will always be however you find it. And like halfdan said, you can make the + on a gear using Xen Stones. The more ap (additional points) the gear has, the better.
