Stuck in chat

i just started about 20 minutes ago and everytime i go to chat with someone i have to restart because the game wont let me do ANYTHING but chat. i dont know if im not doing something tight because no one would tell me but i would think that you should be able to play while your chating. or at least be able to click out of the chat log.

First enter opens it, second sends the message, and third closes it.
