There could be many reasons. One being that the word filter is a bit buggy-ish, and really doesn't work like it should. But this game is still in Beta, so there is plenty of room for improvement.
If you plan on using the word Jesus frequently, and find the filter annoying, may I suggest my favorite alternative, Jebus. XD
Oh, and the forums don't auto-filter. >.> So you don't have to space out your words like you would in-game.

That ones always bugged me... what if your name is Jesus?
The other one that gets to me is class. Oh, and the fact that I can't say the name of my bloody sword. (Can't say it cuz its censored, lol)
I end up having this conversation a lot:
"Hey Snoogie, what kind of sword is that?'
"****"
"What'd you call me!?!"
"-.-"

That's mostly due to the filter blocking words that are profane, and sometimes when they are used in a completely different word, like "Class" or "Glass" The filter is going to block out most of it due to "***" being in it. Though I have noticed that if you have "Class" or something similar at the end of a sentence, with nothing else following it, it will not block it.
The filter blocks out most things that could be used as an insult. Or words that contain a profane word inside of it.
All it takes is just a bit of tweaking to sentence structure, and the use of alternate words to say what you want to say without having to deal with the filter.
I'd personally prefer there to be an option to where you can turn the Mature Language filter on or off.

They censored "homosexual" and "jew"
I am very offended by that.

jesus, homosexual and jew are words often used as curse words and with the meaning to insult someone.
How are you offended by them censoring those words?
Bunnysnoog
07-25-2008, 01:12 AM
The jew one offends me too, because I am Jewish and I'd like to be able to say that I am without it looking like I'm cursing >.>
And, as I said before...some people are actually NAMED Jesus. I'd hate for my name to be censored.

They ban 'Punk' too which is hilarious... I really don't get that one >.<
But I thought they cleared up the 'class' word, so you can say it now without being censored?
Jesus being banned is also... weird... same with Jew...
I also noticed that I can say certain words, but only a certain amount of times..? Like 'Oh, you've had your quota of that 'bad' word for today, try again tomorrow!'

The amount of people using the words Jesus and Jew to curse, is higher than the amount of people using the words Jesus and Jew to tell others their name or religion.

Ummm i could tell you why its censored but i am not sure if i would get in trouble. I will tell you why clam is censored if i get the ok from a CL. They censor religious words because of different beliefs. Thats why jesus is censored. Because it has caused controversies IRL.

Clam is an old slang term for a part of the human anatomy that I'm not going to mention. Use your imagination, or use the wonder world of Google.

But lots of things cause controversy IRL that aren't banned topics in Fiesta. As far as I can tell I'd be able to tell people I'm Catholic ingame without being censored - and in my experience saying that tends to cause controversy online. So why shouldn't people be able to say they're Jewish? Censoring it is only giving in to the idiots who think it's an insult.
Or I could go on Fiesta and talk about the US presidential election, global warming, abortion, or the war in Iraq - all controversial topics IRL. Yet words relating to those aren't censored. So obviously controversy isn't really outlawed. That would be silly.

Punk is used as 'hey punk?! Wanna peace of me?'
Clam is a female bodypart, also used to cuss at women. Mostly in Canada
So anyway, it is annoying that it blocks words in ohter words (like class) and i think it should be allowed to say jew or jesus cause i think that blocking those words is an insult to religions. Oh well.

I'd personally prefer there to be an option to where you can turn the Mature Language filter on or off.
Yes, I completely agree, as a parent I can understand the need for these filters, but recently i have seen an influx of more and more adults joining the world of isya, it would be a great addition to have an On/Off Switch for a Mature Language Filter added.

That would be the coolest thing ever.
And the clam thing. In all the MMO's ive played ppl hardly say clam when reffering to a girl's you no what, or dont even know what it means and I think its stupid to block it. I honestly cant remember more than 2 times someone used clam as an offensive word in a game...but maybe im just nvr there when it happens.

Jesus is often used as a way to curse at someone. I would prefer it remained blocked.
Though I really find the idea of a filter funny. Anyone that I have seen that has the lack of propriety to curse in a public atmosphere (i.e. regular chat), will also go out of their way to bypass the filter to make sure that they are understood, which totally defeats the point of the filter.
But I do appreciate the effort to keep the language clean on Fiesta. I wish bypassing the filter got people a vacation from Fiesta. ^^

Jesus is not a bad word. It's a name. That is all. It isn't a curse word, no matter how you slice it...no matter how you say it's used, no matter how you try to justify it. Jesus is a name. I know some Hispanics named Jesus. It's a name; that is all. Jew is a nationality. Those aren't curse words. If they are not a curse word, they shouldn't be filtered. Instead, leave it to the gamers to report people misusing the words. Racial slurs aren't filtered, yet I feel the community does a good job of keeping on top of it. Jesus is a religious symbol to many. Having his name filtered is like saying their beliefs and religion are inappropriate and offensive, regardless of how other immature gamers use the name. I honestly don't believe Jesus to be offensive. I have never in my entire life seen an instance where it was used as an ugly slur on someone. I actually feel it's more to cater to non Christians who don't want to see religious terms or references in their games. I could be mistaken, though. However, with many people lobbying to remove 'under God' from the pledge, it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case.

well the filter doesnt even do a great job ne way, by just like typing last letter twice(i.e. "jesuss" or "jeww") it wont filter it lol

I have to agree with what Centrix said here, these words mentioned are mentioned more times in an offensive way than a religious matter. Truthfully, I think everyone can say that they've seen more situations where people have been insulting someone or using words in offensive ways than people talking about religion. Now, I'm not going to get into my religious beliefs because that's not what this thread is for, but I will say that no word that has to do with religion would offend me if I saw it, but I think it is a smarter move to keep these few words filtered, but, that's just what I think.

In other games I played, the guild chat is unfiltered because by joining a guild u inherit the guild's maturity rating. An option to turn filters on and off I agree would be really nice.
Also, just because people tend to use a certain word more in its negative connotation does not mean the word should be excluded in the Fiesta dictionary. I don't know where they got their masterlist of censored words but I feel they really do need to change this.
Being able to talk unrestricted between me and my guildmates in private chat is part of the gaming experience.

But as I mentioned before, blocking those words only reinforces the perception that they're somehow "bad". People who really want to be insulting will just put spaces in between their letters or use leet-speak just like they already do for real profanities. But unlike those four-letter words, which are always "mature language", words like "Jesus" or "Jew" don't have a primarily offensive meaning.
For that reason, it doesn't make sense to ban them, even if some people use them as insults. While, as a Christian myself, I of course think it's generally better that people not "take the Lord's name in vain", as it were, censorship to that effect is entirely the wrong way to go about it. My feeling is that if you're allowed to say it on daytime TV (well, in the US anyway... I don't know much about standards in other countries) it should usually be all right for an MMO.

Exactly. Bad words have a bad meaning and were created for offensive use. Jesus was not created to be an insult; and it really isn't used as an insult in the grand scheme of things. We have South Park to thank for Jew having a negative connotation, but Jew in itself is a nationality; not an insult. The problem is people find things offensive without really understanding why. That's why many people over censor: because their clients don't understand why something is bad, they just think it is.
I say again: I have never seen Jesus used in an insulting manner. I have played three different servers, and have been a member since late last year. I don't think Jesus needs to be censored. I do think people need to grow up in this game and learn what they are saying actually means. People use language without understanding it, or take offense to things without really knowing why. I believe the minimum age for this game is 13. Censor language that you wouldn't want a 13 year old seeing or hearing. If you are convinced that Jesus is a four letter word, then at least censor the deliberately offensive phrases with the word in it instead of the word itself; because the word itself has no negative meaning. That's like censoring the word 'Alfred' just because people start using it negatively.

This is another reason to add to my long list of reasons why I don't really have a religion or believe in it. I am going to be honest here... (if you're highly religious stop now)
Highlight this and drag down: Religion is baggage!
^^;
Back on track, I don't know why they censored it nor do I care. If you really do want to use the word that much I suggest you try: J e s u s, Jebus, Je sus... you know the likes, get creative.

So is a Gucci handbag, if you want to get technical, and most atheists of the female persuasion I know would jump at one of those. XP (yeah, I'm just being silly. ^^ )
But I don't think that anyone who's posted so far wants to be able to say these things in order to proselytize on Fiesta. That would be sort of lame. (Although, having street-corner preachers in Elderine might be amusing. XD ) Rather, it's a question of the principle behind banning those words, and whether or not freedom is a better policy in this case than censorship.

Language changes over time. The meaning of words are in a constant state of flux. '***' was a word that originally meant a donkey. As time went on, people insulted other people by calling them donkeys. And now in our time, '***' is a word we generally don't want our children using, because it has almost entirely lost its original meaning.
I don't know anything about you Lythari, but I have to guess you are from a place very different from me. I regularly hear people use the name 'Jesus Christ' as a vulgar term. I am a Christian, and I do not appreciate such use of his name. I guarantee you that the name of Jesus Christ is spoken more often in vulgarity than as a name, with a possible exception on Sunday mornings. :D
And just by-the-bye, the term 'Jew' was used as an insult long before there was ever a South Park. Again, yes it means a nationality, a religion. I would never use it as a slur. But the clear majority of times I hear it used is as a slur.
You say, "The problem is people find things offensive without really understanding why." I would say that more people FAIL to see why others find things offensive, because they lack the experiences of those who have been offended by those terms.

As a fundamental rule when dealing with religion and religious vulgarity:
If you censor one religion, censor them all.
That way you do not create the viewpoint that you are more inclined towards one people or another.
Fiesta/Outspark censors the words Jew and Jesus.
Yet they do not censor the Dalai Lama, Muhammad, Yahweh, Baha'i, Moses, or Buddha.
Why is this? Does Outspark dislike Christians and Jews? Yet favor Buddhists, Baha'i's, Islamics, and Muslims?
I find it offensive that they censor Jew and Jesus.
I find it grossly offensive that they censor Jew and Jesus, but not any other religious figures.
P.S. I know for a fact that Muhammad is used (in my area) as a vulgar term for those of the Muslim or Islamic persuasion.

Okay - this happened the last time this topic was brought up.
Jesus, Jew and a few other words are censored because the ppl at OnSon considered them swear words or could be potentially used to inflame others against their religion. So, to be fair, they removed them.
Will they be uncensored? Maybe... if not, it's no big deal, really. Granted, I am not Jewish and I can understand the frustration at having the word "Jew" blocked - but you also know the many ways it can be used as a derogatory term and must weigh up the facts: can it be used to insult someone else? If so, it’s better to block it and leave it alone.
Will the words be uncensored in the future? Sure, possibly. Until then, however, just live with the fact they are blocked and move on.
I apologize for the finality of my tone but, as I have said, this topic has been brought up before and each time it has only erupted into flaming insults against religion – which, by the way, only strengthen the argument the words should be blocked.
