View Full Version : Pledge to join core group of positive role models

I _____ solemnly pledge to do everything in my powers to help improve Secret of the Solstice, I will take time to be nice to people I meet in the community, answer any questions, share my knowledge and foster the growth of positive vibes in the community.
We wish to create a core group of players that can be a role model for the community. As discussed in this thread:
http://www.outspark.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95039
i think the best start to this plan would be to get all the old-timers together and come to an understanding. If we(yes myself just as much) can start to agree more, then we can take the pros that have the hours in and make a super strong core group, then with a group like that we can actually USE the influence we have instead of just thinking with our pride.
Ahh, my response was more along the lines of agreeing with thrakx's idea, and your explanation Daft. If you guys want, we should first make a -VERY- specific and separate thread for this, where first we round up everyone who would actually willingly contribute to the effort, then next come to a consensus of what we would like to do and see done, etc...
Hmm, it kinda sounds like a player made Council, of sorts.
Anyways, I'm in, if anything comes of this.
I think with the way the game is growing older players need to band together and be a positive example for newer players. New players learn by experience, just like we did, and I bet a more positive experience would create a much more enjoyable overall experience for us all.
We wish to bring back the good old times that were present in the early days of the game. many fond memories(and friends that have departed this SotS world) can be seen in the oldies screenies:
http://www.outspark.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94413
The older players know what the community was like when it was small, yes it has grown drastically and there have been many pressures on the community. it has been suggested that the veteran players are as the role models for the community. so we should all get together to create a positive core group that will exemplify how the community should develop. Being a role model for the rest of the community in every aspect of our SotS lives. So here is your chance to pledge to this cause.
Originally this idea was convcieved as getting together veteran players that have more experience in the game, but then realized that it could be percieved as discriminating against the newer players(which is not what we want). so I think it can apply to everyone, we can all be a positive role model, irrespective of if they were there in what some oldies call the "golden days". So this is also open to the newer players that wish to be a role model for the community
Maybe you can also write a little comment in this thread, giving your ING, and possibly how you envision what can be done in this core group of positive role models for the community. hopefully we can generate some great discussions here in the forums that will flow onto the wider community in the game.
This is a public voting, everyone can see the names of the people that have pledged for the betterment of SOS. This way we can see who the core group of people are, and then take further steps with this group for advancing the SotS community.
I Pledge to do everything in my powers to help the growth of the community.
Edit, hmm I meant to make this a public poll so we could establish who the core group of players would be that will assist in the transformation of Soliste, but somehow it is not. well i guess people could just say hi here if they want to be actively involved in this. :)

i dont know if I like your wording though, too sickly sweet for my taste. You shoulda waited and let Varn make the thread.

hmm it's hard to clasify what you call as "old school", some say it was the CB days, and early OB days, pre CS days, when the community was small and close group of beta testers. all the good times we had, as can be seen in the oldies corner thread.
I don't think this thread is specifically only for the old school veterans, hopefully it is a larger trend that everyone will follow.
many of the more veteran players (well at least the ones that haven't left yet) are the ones making a lot of noise in the forums, they know how the game was, and have strong oppinions on howw the game can be improved. sometimes the oppinions come out in an eloquent manner, and somtimes in a not-so eloquent manner. but i think they all long for the return of the good old days, and even when it comes out in a way that sometimes appears complaining or somewhat threatning, their real objective is purely to improve the game, so that everyone can have a better gaming experiance.
every person can make a difference, the ripple can be continued from person to person, old and new players alike make up the community. if we create an example of a nice atmosphere then it will hopefully give a good impression to the newer players, in this ever growing community, which will hopefully be perpetuated in the wider community.
yes the community has grown much larger, so the love in the community has to also grow to cover the enlarged community. :)
Edit: yeah thralk, everyone has different wording. You have a very different writing style, and Varn also has a different style. Hopefully it is not too "sickly sweet", well you know what we mean anyway. I think we are all aiming at the same thing, even if we express ourselves in very different ways.

I am one of those people who were on the extreme edge of this group, when the CS was still a new entity in the game. I remember when CS items were rare to see (imagine that... O.o). And when Alastor actually showed up at Awakenings, where he was solemnly met with insults and slaps... The community was so much better back then, and I would love to see regression back to that time of bliss.
One thing which I would see as an excellent addition to the game, in that it would help strengthen the community would be more "party quests", in which the completion of the quest is level restricted and nearly impossible to complete solo. The "newbie" labyrinth is a good example of this, since it almost requires you to have a party to complete. I believe that this forced partying would help to strengthen the community.

Well I'm not exactly going to solemnly pledge to do anything considering I already do it.
I for one shouldn't have to be told or coaxed to be nice to other players, whether they be higher players or newbies to the game.
It great that you started a thread about it though, don't get me wrong.
So, with that note...I won't sign up for it...I'll just have the guts to do on my own. Which is what everyone should have been doing in the first place.
Thank-you.

The point of this thread is to get those that already do something about it together to give an example to those new members in the community, and to create much more valuable experience in SoS

Understandable...but it's not easy for everyone to be on at the same time. What are we going to do type in a thread and read it later? Or is there going to an all around the clock Secretary in game to let us know what is going on if we aren't here?
You have a great idea going, but just seems that not all the kinks are worked out in it. Unless I am mistaken...please explain.

Would you like to come up with a better idea? I'd be glad to hear it.
Oh...I was under the impression that you all had this all figured out already.
Hmmm...I guess not. But anyways...I do not have any ideas that would actually work for how you want this to work, considering it will never work. (my opinion, please respect that)
I know players want to see the community work together and be nice and helpful to other players, but eventually it will fall because of other peoples opinions towards the game. It may not happen any time soon, but eventually it will happen. It's no different than owning or being in a guild. Too much drama and not everyone can take all the drama or the patience.
Maybe I'm leading into the wrong direction with whatever plans you have for this little coalition you are trying to put together. Like I said it's a wonderful idea, but I don't feel as though it will go very far with everyone being on different time zones or whatever the case may be.
Either way, I do support your efforts in trying to make the game better for everyone else. However, I feel as though I do not have to read or be coaxed on how to be nice to other players. We shouldn't have to be told to be nice or help players. It should come naturally as a human being.

x.x the point seems like it's getting skewed. The whole point was to draw attention to the fact that the community has been crumbling and concerning itself more with complaining about things we can't change rather than working on keeping the part of the game we do control running and at it's best. The community is something that draws people to the game...don't pledge if you don't want to, but at least recognize that this isn't something being forced upon people and is just symbolic of the fact that people still give a crud about what happens with everyone else.
._.;;;;
...at least I think so, that's what the original point was in my thread anyway... ._.

I'm not sure if my making this thread would have been any more successful than Zeltar, however what has come to my attention, is misunderstanding.
Sawars, no one is trying to make anyone do anything. Sure, it's a pledge form. Taking anything life has to offer at complete face value for the sake of making a point can get you places, and there is a time and place for such actions, but now is not one of them. You don't want to sign up, that is all well and good. Please be the best possible player you can be, without the restrictions of such a farce as wanton effort.
Also, of course there isn't any secretary, or whathaveyou, to keep people informed of "what's going on". The goal here is to restore people's faiths in an ideal community. It might not work, but where is the harm in trying? Don't be so presumptuous as to think we have any plans going on to be lead in a wrong direction. 'We' haven't even tried to come up with 'anything' as of yet, if ever. For now a show of hands will suffice. The people who voted are viewable, as are the ones who decided to go along with Zeltar's "pledge forms".
You are correct in that nobody should be coaxed into helping others, yet it should also go without saying that what goes around comes around. Criticism and negativity are only one desire separate from eachother... Instead of trying to point out the faults of something that is aimed towards the greater good, why not write out constructive stabs at correcting standpoints or perhaps even just some less-cynical words of encouragement.
The point is to care about, to strive for, and put forth the effort.
EDIT: Or perhaps I am wrong? If so, someone correct me...

"The point of this thread is to get those that already do something about it together to give an example to those new members in the community, and to create much more valuable experience in SoS"
Pledging, to those of us who are already helpful, this is either a redundance or an opportunity to say "look at me I'm nice."
"The whole point was to draw attention to the fact that the community has been crumbling and concerning itself more with complaining about things we can't change rather than working on keeping the part of the game we do control running and at it's best. The community is something that draws people to the game...don't pledge if you don't want to, but at least recognize that this isn't something being forced upon people and is just symbolic of the fact that people still give a crud about what happens with everyone else."
"crumbling", wow, the comunity is falling appart? This is a fact? News to me. I recall people being whiny from the beguining. Drawing attention to the "fact" that the cominity is "crumbling" when this is just an opinion isn't fair to those who've had positive expiriences, and it is misleading.
I mean honestly, could it be that some of you old timers wish the community were smaller, less diverse, and easier, therefore, to "steer" and or be aquainted with?
In a little town people are nice to your face because word gets around fast and reputation is at stake. In a big city we are all nobodies. Trying to bring the little country folk attitude to the big city is adorable. These new players, however, were thrust in to a "big city" style SoS.
These are facts: Some players are helpful, some aren't. The SoS you all remember when it was in it's infancy is dead due to the sheer size of it and the evolution of the game itself.
This is my opinion: Good manners and a positive attitude might be contagious, but trying to make the "helpful player" trend stick is as adorable as it is pretentious. Just because we were here when it first begun doesn't make us rolemodels.
I didn't post this to discourage you all, but a thread without an antithesis would be so boring.

Yes the community has been growing and there have been some unpleasant things far in between but thus far most of the people I've met have been good people :] And the community is still one of the better ones out there. I wasn't here for CB or the beginning of OB but helping newbies along the way and being courteous can't go wrong.

"I _____ solemnly pledge to do everything in my powers to help improve Secret of the Solstice, I will take time to be nice to people I meet in the community, answer any questions, share my knowledge and foster the growth of positive vibes in the community."
Ok, here is your constructive critisism:
This is friggin vague. You wonder why its easy to attack?
It reminds me of vows to be "nicer to mom" or "aquire better eating habits".
Concrete is the order of the day when it comes to pledges. "Make dinner for my little sister and wash all the dishes without being asked to" and "eat no more than 500 fat calories per day" is concrete.
In my opinion, here's a better SoS pledge example:
I, katsuragi, pledge to go to the Brindhill Trisecs every time I log on to seek out a xenian that isn't using his skill (xen) and teach this player about skills, hot keys, and anything else the player might need me to explain. I will do this for the remainder of the summer (I used to do this on my runs to Loren). <----This is only an example, you can come up with another concrete (what you will do exacly, when, and for how long) deed.
Not here to say I'm such a nice player, I'm actually extremely self-centered as a general rule. I never commit to doing anything, I just do what I do if I'm in the mood and have the time.
There is your constructive critisism.

I, Trente (and my various alts), happily pledge to go out even more than I may or may not have already been doing to help other players in making a strong community in the MMORPG, Secret of the Solstice, like I remember it so well to be back 5 months ago.

I 100% agree with sawars, this thread has all the right intentions but it is usless, if you have played anyother mmos you would know the community ususlly sticks pretty well together untill issues with the game arise , example we all are easy going towards eachother until promises are broke( better pots soon ( said back in 2nd month of OB) and there is a GAP between outspark supporters and the people who critize them created

Wow, this is a sweet response!! :D
Yes, let's announce it in-game, and see how many people we can get to join up.
Yes this is a "show of hands". The idea is to get an idea of the group that is behind this.
We will then work out where to proceed, maybe starting some more threads for suggestions on how we as players can help the game from a grass-roots level. This is purely related to what we can do as individual players on a daily basis to make the game better, independent of any expectations from C&D etc.
Sawyer, Alienpoker, and izabellizma: yes a lot of us already do this independently already, and will continue doing the right thing. this is just bringing people together, raising awareness, and setting an example, so we see the positive actions that a number of people are making. Seeing the actions of others gives more motivation for us all to make a difference. Yes you can be more specific in your actions, everyone can work out what they can do personally(like Izabellizma suggested helping random xenians).
the intention is there in the community, so many people have already responded. yes there are sceptics that think that this is too hard to do, so they want to bring it down, but there is no harm in trying. every positive difference is worthwhile, even if it takes time and effort to deal with the enlarged community, we can still do it, not as individuals, but as a collective group of people making a positive difference permiating through the community.
I think this acts on different levels, from every individual helping random Xenians, answering questions, buffing random people on the road eyc, to a more organized action happening in the forums(the forums is just about the only way to surpass different time zones).
We have been complaining for long enough in the forums to GM's, OS, C&D etc for long enough. This complaining has not achieved much, mainly a lot of frustration on all sides. As the English saying goes "it takes two to tango", the atmosphere in the game and forums also partly lies on the shoulders of the community. yes we will continue to make suggestions to OS/C&D, but that is not all we can do, they already have plenty of suggestions, let's turn the focus to what we as a community can do to make a difference. We can also do our part in improving the gaming experience for all.
Yes the community has grown since CB, one individual can not have contact with every single person in the wider community. but we can do what we can with the people we have contact with, and have assurance that others else ware in the community are also working for this common goal, each one doing a little bit, but collectively making a large difference.
People can pledge if they want, or do this without pledging, everyone can make a difference in their own way. If someone thinks the wording is too "sweet" then you can use your own wording, it's the intention behind it that counts. Pledges are only symbolic, in the end the difference comes from peoples actions on a daily basis
Well back to the topic of pledging(or supporting the movement however people see fit), this is just a "show of hands" we can discuss further steps & suggestions in future threads.
Spread the news, keep the pledges coming
We all are a part of the community, together we will make a difference:
It is not the actions of one individual, but all as drops in an ocean.

I know I haven't been here that long, but I'm willing to do what I can! Even though I started in June, even I have seen a change. Although I haven't read completely through this thread or the "oldies" thread, I do intend to.
One suggestion I have, more to help the newbs than anything, is to do something about the people that insist on setting up shop in front of an NPC. I try to help newbs as much and as often as I can, and this seems to be one of the problems for them. Even today, I had trouble "talking" to the Transporter b/c someone had name their shop with square characters instead of letters, which took up about four lines. It completely blocked my from clicking on the transporter. Eventually I found the exact angle I need to have my screen, but we shouldn't have to. Actions like that just show complete disregard to other players.
Oh, and I have two characters
127 = squire lvl 47 (at this time)
TranquilWatr = aco lvl 39 (at this time)

Even though I've been doing my part for the community ever since I joined, i wanna be part of this thread. Honestly though you dont need a thread to be a little more helpful and nicer towards people, you just need a Heart.
I always like to have a chat with people in-game especially when im partying with them. At first we'd talk about stuff about the game itself but we eventually start talking about real problems and stuff like that. I always try my best to give them good advise and to try to cheer them up. Not because i wanna become popular or any of that BS, it's just who i am i guess, i like to help.
Hell if i didnt like to help, i wouldnt have spent a freakin week gathering info to create the Pet Guide. But anyway, i think the old days were awesome because we were all equals. We used to all be 1st classes and we used to all be going through the same problems. But now...everyone is different classes, everyone's competing with eachother and obsessed with getting 2nd or 3rd class. Some are even training like mad men for a 4th class that hasnt even been released yet.
I think lots of oldies are getting caught up in the competition and the hardcore grinding and the closeness the community used to have is starting to break, especially when Guilds came out :/

Competition? Wait, wha-? Who's competing here?!? D:
Just take a moment to consider if anyone helped you when you were a lowbie, and made your day better.
Or you could be like me, never having gotten any help, but deciding you didn't want anyone else to have to go through the process of learning everything about the game on your own.

Yes this isn't about competing. This about helping other people. If I got the wrong point accross I'm sorry.
