Answer: Definitely YES.
Its sad. I mean the mage DEF is really sad.
Usually people perfer Mages in AOE parties (because they don't see the full extent of an archer)
Nevertheless, in AOE parties Mages pull the most aggro (ONLY because they have instant dmg =.=')
And due to their pathetic DEF they die extremely fast (usually in 3 hits)
So~ To stay alive, I recommend you +9 everything :D and try your best to get high END gears~
OR you can just be an archer <3

Lol basically archers don't really need def when aoe kiting.
Since we don't get hit often with T3 speed scrolls.
How ever, mages can't run-cast so they need to stand still and take the hits fromt he mob while casting AOE.
So... you tell me xP Which class needs more def but can't obtain as much def as an archer? xP

In my opinion, Magic is more important than Def, unless you want to go crazy and go tank AoE north Eir... O_O
But if you have good Def, you may be able to get killed in 3 hits where people normally die with 2 hits... lol
I prefer to xen my staff before my other gears... That's just my opinion though.

Magicians are the main aoers of this game, and because of their low def, people find it very hard and dangerous to aoe.

So i really think that Magicians need more def.

They need def no matter what.. Damage comes 1st.. Smelt your staff until +4 above and then smelt your armors etc.. Since mages are mostly poor which is no so true these days, enhance your gear after becoming mage (after u learn frost) or buy an enhanced gear from other players..

Apprentices/mages need def. More important is your staff (in my opinion), though. The defense is there just so that monsters don't kill you as hard, because apprentices/mages have somewhat of a poor defense.

If you're wondering about scouts/archers, they have better gears as they level so they don't need as much defense boosts in terms of AP and "+"s than apprentices.

As an equip, no, apprentices don't have shields. Kayarine has told you of an Apprentice skill which is learned at level 31 (I think).

FYI: The maximum defense anyone of the mage class can have in SoS is 289 assuming that they are an Archmage and every gear that gives defense is +10 6ap. Also, it takes 326 defense to tank in Chanthery Gorge so yeah...

I think the only plausible time frame for mages to aoe is at lvl 90 or below..
aoe gets alot more difficult after chant of course, but the defense difference between wizards and other classes (especially warriors muahaha) also becomes greater at higher levels.


this makes me wonder how much defense a level 175 warlord would have with perfect +10/6 gears :)

mages are not meant to mob.. we are there to assist aoe.. we can mob but a small one, not a whole map.. Our advantage is that we can solo at high lvl map unlike other classes due to our consistent damage..

Back to the question, we INDEED need defense to last long enough while getting aggroed by 3+ mobs.. The first mage that brought the importance of defense to me was a mage named 4everz (most of you wouldn't know him).. Defense is needed to stay alive, to small mob, to safely assist aoe and to survive in pvp.. With magic shield, our defense is as high as rogue.. Try grab +5+ 6ap or enhance until at least +4.. You will realize soon that having good defense is fun.. I had higher defense than 90% of the knights back at 8X.. They were so weak and it's fun to show that i could mob edine too.. ROFL..

sennin is the next after rud in mage capable aoe then loren then kramer anything else is unknown to me xD loren was my last non magic sheild aoe map
