if you don't know what direct X is you haven't installed any game made after Nvidia Bought out 3dfx. Heck I even diablo 2 installs direct X automatically. And to answer your question Direct X is a Mandatory Program created by microsoft that is required by almost every game made after 1998 to function on a x86 Operating system. If you don't understand that go to the top of your browser type in http://www.microsoft.com and do a search for Direct X.
