I have done this and it should work

1) Get out of Roumen
2) Go to like forest of tides or where not much people are
3) Open the hourglass
4) Hold down participate until it says recruiting on the bottom left bar
5) When it says that release the participate
6) You should be in

You say it works, but if everyone done it this way would it work then, as it does not add any more slots to the KQ I don't think so and anyway it does not work all the time, as you will find out soon enough.
